MetaHeritage In-person meeting in the Azores

02. – 03. 10. 2025, the Azores

On the 2nd and 3rd October 2025, the MetaHeritage consortium wrapped up the second in-person meeting in São Miguel, the Azores.

This gathering was an excellent opportunity to discuss with our partners the next steps of the project, review the progress of all work packages, finalise the topics on which the business cases will be developed, and exchange views on the upcoming key events in which we will be involved.

As part of our consortium field trip, we also had the opportunity to explore the fascinating intersections of nature, culture, and industry in the Azores. We visited the Parque Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens in Furnas — originally established in the late 18th century for fishing and boating, the site now attracts numerous visitors with its thermal pool and its rich, diverse gardens.

Our next stops were two tea plantations: the Porto Formoso Tea Factory, a small-scale producer of local black tea located on the island’s north coast, and Chá Gorreana, Europe’s oldest tea factory still in operation, which offered a more industrial perspective on tea production.

The meeting with these and other key local stakeholders was valuable for all partners, as it provided a better understanding of the challenges and needs of the tourism sector in the Azores.
